We were at the Chicago Food and Wine Festival last night, at the Last Call event featuring some of Chicago’s finest pastry chefs. (Wow!) So today I’m inspired to share some sweet treats, so that you in turn can share some sugar with friends. – The perfect accompaniment to a Sunday lunch.
It’s National Waffle Day today, in honor of the first waffle iron patent being issued on August 24, 1869. So we’ve been eating waffles for a long time. I came across this quote and thought it was perfect for today. Leslie Knope (Parks and Recreation) will always amuse.
Today is the birth date of Alexander Milne Calder, a Scottish sculptor and patriarch of an artistic clan. Born in 1846 he worked on the Albert Memorial in London before moving to America. In the States he’s most famously associated with Philadelphia City Hall. He’s father to Alexander Stirling Calder and grandfather to the more well known Alexander “Sandy” Calder (creator of the mobile).
I’ve written before about whether or not to send greeting cards (see here). Nowadays a text or social media post is deemed acceptable. So when I came across this graph to determine how to make that decision it made me laugh.

Everyone is familiar with the tooth fairy: the magical spirit who leaves a coin in return for a baby tooth. Typically the exchange is done under the pillow of a sleeping child, but there are now some wonderfully creative pockets in which to place the offering and receive the treasure.
